MILITECH FIRETEAM

Corporate

By Robert Elliot, war correspondent
PRO TIP
This is me trying to figure out how an actual professionnal military fireteam would be stated.

In a pinch, these NPCs can also serve Arasaka, the NUSA Army, the Soviets or whatever you can think of.

Also, this is a very deadly encounter.
I was in Skopje at the time, following a Militech fireteam as they sprinted through a street.

Well, they weren’t Militech at the time. They wore grays, pretending to be Albanian nationalists, wearing nonsense nationalist symbols made by the marketing department back in Washington. They “knew” some "Albanian" sentences, but at most, they only had a few lines they could say out loud. They weren’t fooling anybody though. They spoke with thick southern accents when they were alone. Honestly, it is no wonder that it took only a few weeks for the world to figure out that Militech had troops in the conflict. Whole shit show that was.

The fireteam barged into a bombed-out elementary school. They were taking up advanced position, to cover the eventual advance of one of the “Albanian” APCs slowly making their way towards the City Center.

Gunshots, close. We saw a few smoke grenades pop across the Boulevard. The gunner sat her Machine Gun on a window frame, wiping away the broken glass with a flick of her metal arm. She blinked, her eyes glew blue. She communicated to the squad. She had switched to thermals. Seven visible targets a few street blocks away, she said.

The team leader, a Texan with an impressive beard, sat a few feet back having a moment with the HQ. He revealed that there was infantry coming, lots of it and that the mechanized backup was pinned. Orders were to hold territory gained and wait for the airstrike. No ETA. One of the rifleman groaned in the next room.

Then I saw the enemy through the white smoke. A squad was snaking from alley to alley across the Boulevard. The LMG opened up, firing in short bursts. Two of them went down instantly. The enemy answered in kind. We took cover as a hail of bullets shattered the holographic classroom board behind us. The grenadier called a direction, we heard a “toomp.” Then, an explosion. From the newly enlarged window a hundred feet away, we heard screams. The enemies were stuck, pinned by suppressive fire, waiting to be blown up by the smart grenades.

It took 45 minutes for the Militech aerodynes to finally arrive. I’m surprised I lived to tell the tale.

Here is the data I collected on them.

LASER DESIGNATOR (Cybereye)

  • As an action, the Team Leader shoots a laser from his eye, designating aTarget they can see. This laser designator is readable by smart ammunition only.
  • If the Target is immobile, like if it is an object, the ground or a wall, the smart ammunition will hit the designated point if the shooter aims for it (no need to roll.)
  • If the Target is moving (like if the designated target is a person, or if the object is in motion), the shooter instead adds +1 to their to hit roll.

TACTICS

This squad was designed to work together very efficiently. These are soldiers, not gangoons. They won't give your players the opportunity to shoot back.

The fireteam's strategy should be to keep enemies pinned until they can deal the killing blow.

The fireteam works best when they work as two teams: the first, which includes the machinegunner and the rifleman, keep the target pinned with nonstop suppressive fire.

With the target pinned, the second team, which includes the team leader and the grenadier, can get into position to expertly get rid of the target. To do so, they use the Team Leader's ability Laser Designator, which can basically aim the grenadier's gun for him. If the Team Leader is unavailable, the Grenadier also knows how to shoot by himself, like a big boy/girl.

This is one of the closest things to a "boss fight" I can think of for Cyberpunk. Enemies have military equipment, advanced tactics, and will refuse to engage the players unless they have the upper hand. Don't use these NPCs unless the players have managed to make some really powerful enemies.
